As the Board of County Commissioners gears up for their meeting tomorrow, July 14, 2025, a key item on the consent agenda catches our eye: a resolution to apply for a Community Planning Technical Assistance (CPTA) Grant from FloridaCommerce. This could pave the way for smarter public safety planning, and we’re breaking it down for you.
What’s on the Table?
The CPTA Grant cycle for State Fiscal Year 2025-2026 opened on July 2, 2025, with a deadline of August 1, 2025. FloridaCommerce is offering up to $1,520,000 for community planning projects, with a cap of $75,000 per applicant. No matching funds are required, and projects must wrap up by May 30, 2026. The grant supports a range of efforts, from comprehensive planning to economic development, disaster recovery, resilience, and creative infrastructure ideas.
Proposed Use: Fire and EMS Assessments
Wakulla County plans to request the full $75,000 to fund two studies for Fire Rescue. The first will update the 2021 Fire Services Assessment, which underpins the current Fire Municipal Services Benefit Unit (MSBU), ensuring fair funding as the county grows. The second will explore an EMS Services Assessment to see if an MSBU for EMS services makes sense. Both are practical steps to strengthen safety services.
What Else Could It Do?
This grant has flexibility—past uses here include the East Wakulla County Sewer Feasibility Study, FEMA Community Rating System updates, and Residential/Commercial Needs Analyses. It’s a tool for tackling diverse planning needs, like infrastructure or recovery efforts. The current focus on safety studies fits well, especially with the push for innovative approaches. While the $75,000 limit keeps it narrow, it aligns with community priorities and builds on planning.
Funding and Timeline:
The grant operates on a reimbursement basis, meaning the county would cover costs upfront, with funds reimbursed later. If approved, the Board will review the final agreement down the line. The one-year timeline fits the studies’ scope.
What’s Next?
On the consent agenda, this resolution should sail through tomorrow unless something unexpected arises. The County Administrator will sign off, allowing staff to finalize the application by August 1.
